Week 13 Free Inquiry – Summary

My last inquiry post… seems crazy to me but here we are! Overall, I really enjoyed the inquiry process. It was nice to have a project that was designed for us to devote time to something we were interested in. My original question was how can I increase my engagement on social media, but over the 13 weeks, that question did shift. I explored many things related to social media including shifting focus to video content, and incorporating more teacher related content into my personal social media. I also reflected on other topics such as the effect of stress and weather on my creativity and the importance of self-care and mental health.

What went well with my inquiry: I think the best part of my inquiry was the freedom I had to explore any topics that came up through the process. I enjoyed focusing less on the outcome and more on the process. Through research and conversations with friends, I became very inspired about content creation and creativity in general. I think I was able to really delve into the reasons why I started content creation and why I want to continue as well as the importance creativity has on my mental health.

What didn’t go well and what I would change: I definitely could not devote as much time as I wanted to my inquiry. When life got busy, I fell off track with it and was not able to post as much as I had planned. I also did not see any improvement in my engagement and following which was unfortunate. If I were to do it again, I would try to spend more time on the inquiry and make more sustainable and small goals for each week. Additionally, I feel like many of my updates were very similar so if I were to do it again I would either pick specific things to reflect on each week (related to the goals) or I would just make fewer updates so they were more differentiated.

I plan to incorporate inquiry into my teaching because I think it is a great way to get students engaged in learning about topics they are interested in. Additionally, I think the freedom allows for critical and creative thinking and metacognition which are all important skills for students to develop. Similarly, I feel that inquiry is a great way to make documentation of learning very accessible and inclusive as it can be shown in many ways. I’m curious to know how others plan to integrate what they learned into their teaching? Please comment down below!

Week 13 Reflection – Summary

I cannot believe we have reached the last week of EDCI 336! I have learned so much throughout this course and it has been a great opportunity to discuss and explore many topics related to EdTech.

One of my favorite topics was AI, because it is a topic I have been interested in but have also been apprehensive to explore. Through our discussion, I was able to explore different types of AI and realized the many benefits of generative AI. I believe resources such as Craiyon and Chat GPT could be very useful in my future teaching career. Craiyon is a great tool for creating AI images, which is an easy and accessible way to create our own content. Similarly, Chat GPT is a great tool to generate written content. However, as we discussed in class, it is important to be critical of what Chat GPT comes up with. Here is a video I found on how to incorporate Chat GPT into your teaching.

I found the most challenging part of the course was practicing screencasting. It took quite a bit of time to figure out and I found it rather tedious. However, I understand the importance of teachers having these different skills. I also think it is very important for teachers to always be learning new things and to not avoid certain tools or topics because they are not confident with using them.

I plan to incorporate tech into my teaching in many ways. I would like to start using Chat GPT to help with my lessons planning (this has been allowed by our practicum leaders), incorporating technology to make classrooms more accessible and engaging for students such as using speech to text or games in the classroom, and using inquiry in classrooms to allow students to explore topics they are interested in and showcase their learning in many ways. I’d love to hear how others plan on incorporating tech into their teaching?

Week 11 Reflection

This week’s topic was on gamification and coding in classrooms. I think that the gamification of the curriculum is an amazing way to motivate and engage students. Additionally, using games such as Minecraft or Roblox in the classroom is a good way to connect with your students (as long as you know the right lingo!). I think people underestimate the learning that can happen with games, although they do need to be effective games. A danger with using games can be that you don’t actually focus on leveraging the curriculum and instead just choose fun and cheerful games. While those can be a good way to get kids engaged and excited, it is really important to choose games that are effective and educational.

Here is a video I found about the use of games in the classroom, and although it contains a paid partnership it still has some good reasons to use games and some examples. I would love to hear others thoughts on using games in the class.

I think I would want to bring in games early on into my classroom. I’m hoping to one day teach K-3 and I think that is such a great age to use games. I wonder what others think about using games in the classroom? Let me know in the comments!

Bringing in coding is another really great way to engage students. Additionally, I think having at least a passable knowledge of coding is practically essential in today’s society. Many jobs nowadays are in technology sectors and even jobs in other sectors often include some sort of technology aspect whether it is website designing, social media promotion or something more complex.

Micro:bit is a very useful resource that I was introduced to a little earlier this semester when Science Venture came into our Science Pedagogy class. I love how it is such a straightforward interface that even with no coding knowledge you can start working with it. This means that not only is it easy for students to use, it is also simple for teachers to incorporate in their classrooms. It would not take too much learning for a teaching to have a proficient understanding of the technology. Technology is often a very scary thing for teachers to bring into classrooms, usually because they are not confident with it. Therefore, having easy to use resources can make these topics more accessible which I believe is a huge benefit to students.

Week 11 Free Inquiry

Honest update incoming: I have not thought about social media in the past week. This has not necessarily been by choice, but with lesson plans upon lesson plans due and practicum coming up, I have not had the mental capacity to focus on Instagram on this inquiry. I still would like to incorporate some of my previous goals like making education based content and connecting more with my followers, but I have definitely failed at that this week. However, I have still learned a lot from this and past weeks. I have learned that when I get overwhelmed and stressed my hobbies fall to the wayside (I mean doesn’t this happen to everyone – still good to reflect on this). this also means that a lot of my self care practices have also fallen to the side, including social interactions. I have not even spent time with friends or my partner in person, therefore I cannot even fathom trying to create content for my online community.

This has lead me to make a goal for this week and while it is not directly related to my inquiry I believe it will help me become active on Instagram again. My goal is just to incorporate some kind of self-care activity everyday this week. Whether that is getting coffee with a friend or having a relaxing shower, I want to prioritize my mental health again during this busy time. I have found a list of self-care ideas from Good housekeeping that I can refer to during this week: self-care activities.

Week 10 Free Inquiry

This week I worked on reaching out to brands to get some collaborations for the spring and summer. I was able to secure another collaboration with Bluenotes (I have worked with them in the past), as well as with a brand called Sunday Club.

Getting to work with brands is one of my favorite parts of content creation (and not just because I get free stuff – although that is cool!). But I love being able to share brands I love with my followers and community. I have had so many opportunities because of my content creation and have made some very close friendships. As I near the end of this inquiry, I have been reflecting on the fact that even if I have not increased my followers, I am still so thankful for my platform and everything that has come from it. I have realized more than ever that it is more important to me to create meaningful connections and community versus focusing on followers and engagement. Through Instagram I have had the opportunity to work with many brands, do multiple photoshoots, make connections with small female-run businesses, stay at an AirBnb with friends, and have made countless meaningful friendships.

I remember back when I first started content creating and I got my very first collaboration with Teangle Matcha. It was such an exciting moment and has lead to so many more amazing opportunities and memories.

I look forward to seeing where my content creation journey will take me next!

Week 10 Reflection

This week we engaged in an EdCamp Unconference, with various groups discussing topics that were of interest to us. Going through the process of coming up with topics, organizing them, combining them, and then scheduling them was a very interesting look into how these conferences actually work. I liked that we were able to pick the topics we were interested in not have to pick from predetermined topics. There was a lot of choice in this, which felt empowering and engaging. I really enjoyed being able to discuss these topics with my peers because we don’t often get a chance to actually discuss these topics and everyone brings something different to the table.

I chose to discuss how to manage difficult behaviour and bringing community involvement into classrooms. I found the conversation about managing difficult and disruptive behaviours most interesting. Our group had lots of good ideas about this topic, and it is a very salient topic for us especially going into practicum.

Some of our ideas included:

  • Creating meaningful relationships with students – if they trust you they are more likely to talk through their problems with you.
  • Realize they likely have something deeper going on – separate bad behaviour from the idea that they are a bad kid.
  • Discuss with parents – they likely have insight into what may be going on with their child.
  • Make sure to set clear expectations – have honest and authentic conversations with students about what you expect from them.
  • Have lots of supports and resources in your class when you can – things like fidgets, a sensory room, a stationary bike, etc. can be very helpful to manage behaviours.

After EdCamp, I did some more research and found this infographic from Brooke’s Publishing that included a lot of the same points we had made.

What other ideas do people have for managing difficult behaviour? Leave them in the comments!

Ed Tech Group Presentation

For our Ed Tech presentation my learning pod decided to look into and discuss the pros and cons of using social media in the classroom. Our inquiry question was “Should social media be incorporated into the classroom? And if so, how?”. This is a topic I am particularly interested in and have done a fair amount of research into this topic in the past. Our conversation included our research as well as our personal views, and since these were quite different we were able to have a thoughtful conversation about both sides of the question.

For this project, I completed my own research, shared my ideas in the conversation, and was in charge of filming, editing, and posting our video to YouTube. To edit the video I used CapCut, an application that I am quite familiar with for video editing.

Here is the link to our video, along with an embedded version.

Week 9 Free Inquiry

This week I struggled with posting on my Instagram again, upon doing some reflection I think it is because I am struggling to incorporate my two identities of student teacher and fashion content creator. I have been conflicted between where to put my energy, because I have to put almost all my energy into schoolwork I find it very difficult to devote my leftover time and energy into content creation. It just seems like my time could be better used either continuing to work on school work or to rest and recover.

Because of this reflection, I decided to do a little bit of research into why social media marketing is an important skill for teachers to have. I thought that maybe I would be more interested in spending time creating content if it was related to teaching. We have had some discussions in class about teachers as content creators, and I wanted to dive a little deeper into that concept. In my EdTech presentation we discussed social media use in the classroom and our various opinions and research on the topic and I am a strong proponent of teachers incorporating or leveraging social media within classrooms. From upEducators, I found a article discussing the reasons it is important for teachers to have social media skills. These included communicating efficiently, engaging students, keeping parents in the loop, and collaborating with other educators.

These reasons are very similar to the reasons I feel that using social media as a tool for teaching is so important. I also think that maybe trying to make content that is related to teaching would help me be more motivated to create content in general. Even if it is not strictly related to school even creating content that revolves around my student teacher life such as outfits of the week for practicum, or a vlog of my morning routine as a student teacher would allow me to engage in my creative outlet while still having it relate to school. I would like to try creating this kind of content to see how it makes me feel and also see how it performs on Instagram.

Week 9 Reflection

This week we discussed the complexities of online learning and how it influences accessibility. After experiencing online learning myself throughout lockdown a lot of the pros and cons were familiar to me. While I definitely found benefits from online classes (class in bed!), I also realized that my personal learning and connection within the class were negatively affected. I think a lot of the options provided in class that blend face to face and online learning are the most effective way to optimize accessible learning. While I prefer being in class, having the option to zoom into classes especially when sick is such an important option for me to ensure I stay caught up with class work. I think it would be great to extend this option into the K-12 realm.

I also really enjoyed learning about the 5 R’s of decolonizing and indigenizing online learning. The 5 R’s are respect, reciprocity, relevance, responsibility, and relationships. Bringing in decolonization and indigeneity is such an important part of teaching but it can be so difficult to know how to do it, especially as a white settler. Having the resources to integrate these concepts and weave them throughout our teaching is so helpful.

Many parts of Meghan’s discussion really resonated with me including her thoughts on inclusion. One thing she mentioned that most of my classmates were really excited about were Shelly Moore’s seed packets as a way to let kids explain the support they need and who they are as learners. I plan to implement these in my classroom as they are a great way to get to know your students and provide the most effective support to them. They are also a cute way to do it and can be hung on the wall if the students give consent.

Another really important part of inclusion from Meghan’s discussion is allowing students to present in different ways. I really like the idea of allowing students to have their presentation presented by the teacher, presenting just to the teacher, or do the presentation to the whole class. As someone who struggled with social anxiety, if I had been given the option to just present to the teacher I would have felt a lot less anxiety around presentations. However, I also believe that because I was required to do this presentations throughout my school career, I have become quite adept and confident with public speaking. Would I have gained the skills even without having to do presentations throughout school? I do not know the answer but I am curious what others think/ or other peoples experiences. Let me know in the comments!

Week 8 Free Inquiry

This week I decided to try asking ChatGPT “How to increase social media engagement” to see what tips it would come up with. I have not done as much research as I maybe could have in this inquiry and so I wanted to both try doing a little more research while also practicing using ChatGPT (which I don’t have that much experience with).

Photo by Emma Scholten is licensed underĀ CC BY 4.0

It came up with many tips on how to increase social media engagement including “knowing your audience, having a consistent posting schedule, creating quality content, using hashtags wisely, having engaging captions, creating visually appealing content, hosting contests and giveaways, using stories, responding to comments, doing collaborations, using analytics, sharing educational content, and making paid content.” From my experience these tips are some of the best ways to increase social media engagement. However, they are also quite vague and do not provide too much detail on what actually is visually appealing content or engaging captions. Additionally, although paid content and collaborations can be really good for your career as a content creator, if done too frequently it can lead to frustration from your followers and even losing followers. I would be curious to know what other content creators think about these tips.

Even though it is important to read these tips with a critical eye, some of them like having a consistent posting schedule and responding to comments are definitely helpful tips. Also when I hosted a giveaway once I did gain a lot of followers in a short period of time and that increase was sustained (they did not all unfollow right after the giveaway ended). I think I would like to host another giveaway in the next month or two. Overall, I think using ChatGPT is a great way to get bigger picture tips and ideas.
